Greetings,
Those of you who are not familiar with this Denon THX ultra II Flagship Receiver can read comprehensive reviews (many places), but Audioholics and Secrets of Home Theatre have the best.
Secrets has both the 5800 as well as the 5803 which the unit for sale was upgraded to (audio side only).
With new HI-REZ dvd formats pending, I was concerned that this unit in it's present state may not be able to handle the discrete 6 and 7.1 audio formats the Dolby and DTS will be offering since it does not have HDMI and therefore would not be current enough.
Both Denon and Dolby said the same thing regarding HDMI. Not many people use the V in A/V receiver so from a video perspective (if you do not have digital inputs on your display and the new players do not offer component out), you do have an issue. With regard to the audio, since Dolby will be using the same MLP Lossless packaging used for HI-REZ audio like DVD-A, you have it made in the shade.
Not only (as you know) the 5800/03 has 3 sets of surrounds (7.1) or 8ch with the sub. The 2 sets of analogs on your receiver are 8ch each.
Regardless of whether you have a HD-DVD or a BLU-RAY, (in fact you could have one of each) you can accomodate both because all players will have analog outs regardless of whether we do a firmware upgrade for those extra digital inputs. Remember may people have only 5 and 6.1 receivers which they want to keep.
On top of all that, the software (movie studios) providers will decide how many discrete channels will go on a film. If you have the speakers, your good to go for 7.1 discrete channels X 2 as is.
My brother just bought the new Denon 5805 10.2 Flagship, ($8000.00 txs incl) and as I mentioned before the 5800 upgrade was only on the audio side.
A 5803 upconversts composite and s/vid to component (still 480i) and since I use an out board scaler, it would be easier for me to route my L/D, S/Vid vcr and 3 dvds through 1 component input into the scaler.
Anyway, this 62lb 5800/03 in perfect condition is available for pickup in the GTA for $3250.00.
Please PM me at petermwilson@rogers.com if your interested.
Thanks for looking,
Peter M.
